Big Time Wake-up Call

About 25 years ago, I began to have thoughts that the way I was treating patients (primarily by extraction of permanent teeth followed by retractive mechanics to obtain the best occlusion I could) might not be the best way to treat, but I was able to put them out of my mind because it was obvious to me that if I brought those thoughts and feelings front and center, it was going to change my life in a big way.

And, to be frank, I was very afraid of what might be on the other side of change, so I stuffed the doubts away and kept doing what I had been doing. Then, my best friend and best referring dentist asked me to lunch one day. As I sat there eating, my friend told me that he had been taking some continuing education courses, traveling extensively, and meeting orthodontists who were not taking teeth out as frequently as I did and were treating earlier than I did.

To top it off, he was very impressed with the results they were getting. Eventually, he said: "Bill, why do you treat the way you do?" And, I answered him truthfully. I replied....

"That's what I was taught to do!"
